Lot Description
Contemporary Snaphance Rifle with Grotesque Motifs
John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

About .40 caliber. 32" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Bright metal finish. Walnut stock has carved rococo style molding around fittings, grip, and forearm. Snaphance rifle with notch and blade sights. Item features an adjustable brass peep sight mounted to upper tang but it does not line up correctly with front sight. Stock features lost wax cast brass and silver filigree style fittings overall, showing both animal and human grotesque figures. Triggerguard appears to be a cast brass representation of a nude nymph. There are also grotesque fittings carved from elk antler to forend, wrist, patchbox cover, and buttplate. Fittings are carved with Germanic folkloric figures and rubbed with ash or soot to darken details. Included with item is a brass tip red wood ramrod and leather sling.

Condition Report

Very good. Bore is bright, with some spots of oxidation to rifling. Finish shows some light scratches and patination. Wood stock is in good condition. There appears to be a repair to heel of buttplate, possibly made during the creation of item. Action is functional, but trigger is somewhat free and moves back and forth.
