Lot Description
Two Galanos Dresses, 1980-90s

This lot contains two dresses by James Galanos. The knit dress with long sleeves was donated by James Galanos to the consignor and was recorded as 'sample #735', from Fall 1988.  

James Galanos (1924-2016) was the only son of Greek born parents. In 1944, he became a general assistant at the New York East 49th Street emporium of Hattie Carnegie. Galanos was known for using the finest materials and impeccable construction, often called the ‘American Couturier’. With a career that spanned five decades, he dressed Hollywood stars, royalty, and political figures of the day.

THE FIRST
Black and grey paneled velvet strapless dress with ruching details throughout, black and clear beaded stripes, built in boning, side slit, and side zipper closure.

THE SECOND
Black wool knit maxi dress with high neckline, set in long sleeves, five off center gold-tone buttons, side slit, center back zipper closure, and matching silver-tone and gold-tone belt. Sample #735, Fall 1988. The belt and buttons are by Tess Sholom.

THE FIRST
The overall condition is good. On the right side, the beaded stripes have a few pulled threads and loose beads. The bottom of the dress is not hemmed as well as the bottom of the slit. Along the inner top of the chest, there are a few prick marks, as well as a small hole in the center front along the second beaded stripe. There are also a few picked threads in the lining along the interior hem.

THE SECOND
The overall condition is very good with no visible issues.
