Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A CDV album containing images of Civil War officers including Medal of Honor recipient Perry Wilkes, and others.

Octavo album (5 1/4 x 6 1/2 in.) containing 13 CDVs, many subjects identified on image, mount, or album page (toning and soiling to some CDVs; edge and corner wear to mounts; surface wear and loss to album). 

The album is highlighted by a CDV of Perry Wilkes (1830-1889). Helena, AR: T.W. Bankes. Wilkes served as the pilot aboard the USS Signal. He received the Medal of Honor for heroic action on 5/5/1864 at Red River, LA. While proceeding up the Red River, the USS Signal engaged a large force of enemy field batteries and sharpshooters, returning their fire until the ship was totally disabled, at which time the white flag was ordered raised. Wilkes stood by his wheel until it was disabled in his hands by a bursting shell.

Additional subjects include: Cassillly Adams (1843-1921), Civil War veteran and artist best remembered for his epic work, Custer’s Last Fight, which he completed in 1885. Cincinnati, OH: D.A. Two-cent revenue stamp on verso. -- "Lieut. Gardner" (as identified on album page). Boston, MA: Southworth & Hawes. -- Vignetted view of an unidentified second lieutenant. New Orleans, LA: McPherson & Oliver (soiling, mount corners rounded). -- Standing portrait of an unidentified officer. Cincinnati, OH: Leon Van Loo (mount corners trimmed). -- Young man identified on verso as "Wm. A. Adams, Dec. 15, 1865." Troy, NY: A. Corden. -- "Dr. Francis 'Ouachita(?)'" (as identified on album page). Boston, MA: Whipple. -- "Henry Seagrave, Quartermaster 'Finder' (?)" (as identified on album page). Uncredited (staining to mount). -- CDV of woman. Cincinnati, OH: Leon Van Loo. -- CDV of toddler-aged child. Cincinnati, OH: J. Landy.
