[CIVIL WAR]. KLAUSER, William, photographer. A group of 3 CDVs of Russian crews aboard identified warships that helped secure Union Harbors, incl. Variag, Osliaba, and Almaz. New York, n.d.
3 1/4 x 2 3/8 in. or smaller CDVs on cardstock mounts (some separations/punctures to prints and mounts, dampstaining to certain areas, light spotting and toning throughout; mounts with spotting/soiling and edge/corner wear). Each credited to Klauser on verso. Versos also bear ink inscriptions: Captain and officers of the Russian corvette. [V]ariag. -- Captain and officers of the Russian frigate Osliaba. -- Captain and officers of the Russian clipper "Almaz. -- Together, 3 CDVs.
For a short time during the Civil War, Russian warships were positioned to protect New York and San Francisco from possible British or French attack. The US showed its gratitude by inviting the Russian navy to parade along New York City's Broadway Street and by hosting various receptions and dinners in their honor.
