Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 37 tintypes of women of varying ages, incl. studious and religious subjects.
A portrait of two women posed before a landscape painted backdrop and wearing intricately patterned shawls. They both holds hats in their laps. -- A portrait taken from the side of a group of 3 women, seated and looking forward earnestly at something off-camera. -- A portrait of two women standing over what appears to be a wooden pedestal or box with a rectangular open slot at the front. The women pose with an open book between them, and the woman on the viewer's left holds some kind of rectangular object in one hand. It has been suggested that this could be a ballot box, making these ladies suffragists, but it could alternatively be a standing model of a stereoviewer. -- A portrait of a young woman wearing a flower headpiece and a puffy-sleeved white dress, holding a book with a strikingly white cross against a black background on the cover. The girl's expression is very stern. -- A portrait of a young girl seated at a table, engaged in reading an open book. She rests one foot on a footrest below. -- A portrait of a woman decked out in fur and finery, posed partly before a palm-tree painted background. Sideboards of a building are visible to the side of the painted backdrop. -- A portrait of three women posed together, the face of the woman on the viewer's right is obscured as the plate has been repeatedly, likely intentionally, scratched over it. -- And 30 others, including a more recent tintype made as a "Souvenir of San Gabriel Mission, San Gabriel, Calif." and a portrait of a standing aged woman housed in a sleeve with backmark for Cook's of Davenport, IA. -- Together, 37 tintypes featuring women, ranging in size from 1 x 1 5/8 in. to 4 3/8 x 6 1/2 in. Most loose. Conditions vary.
