[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 40+ tintypes of men of varying ages, incl. individual and group portraits.
A group of approx. 43 tintypes of male subjects ranging in size from 1 1/4 x 1 in. to 8 x 6 1/2 in., most approx. 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 in.
Highlights include: One (2) 8 x 6 1/2 in. tintype of an aged gent and two (2) 7 x 5 in. tintype portraits, one showing a bearded fellow, the other showing a man and woman posed together among various plants (surface wear to plate). -- Tintype of a young man wearing a suit, standing beside a large urn (some creasing). -- Studio view of three men seated a table sharing some drinks. -- Portrait of two men seated before a painted backdrop featuring the Cliff House (some light creasing). -- View of two men and two women, possibly a double date, seated in a boat named the "Shamrock," with an American flag flying from the back. -- Studio view of a couple seated in a beach setting. -- Tintype in paper mat/sleeve, showing a mustachioed man smoking a cigar, signed in lower margin of mat "Yours truly, William Shield" (residue on verso). -- Tintype in paper mat/sleeve stamped "Souvenir," showing three men wearing aprons, one which appears to be Asian. -- View of 5 men gathered together, engaged in horseplay. At least one appears to hold a knife (plate heavily worn, including surface loss and creasing). -- View of two couples, housed in paper sleeve captioned, "A Barrel of Love." -- Multiple portraits of men wearing hats. -- Gem-sized tintype housed in a CDV-sized paper sleeve/mat with imprint of J.F. Lowrie, Gem Photographer, Liverpool. -- And others.
Together, approx. 43 tintypes. Condition ranges from very good to fair. Many with edge and corner wear, including a few with oxidation. Many with surface wear, and some with creasing.
