BURCKHARDT, John Lewis (1784-1817)
Travels in Syria and the Holy Land. London: John Murray, 1822.4to (270 x 218 mm). Lithographic portrait, 6 engraved maps (2 folding), numerous illustratoins in text. (Some light spotting or browning, short tear to fold of first folding map.) Contemporary half calf, pasteboards (covers detached, losses to spine, lightly rubbed, old tape repairs). FIRST EDITION, edited by William Leake, describing Burckhardt's journeys between 1810 and 1816. He studied Arabic at Aleppo in preparation for his travels. He traveled to Syria and the Holy Land, and was the first European to visit Petra.
