Contemporary half calf, pasteboards (covers detached, losses to spine, lightly rubbed, old tape repairs). FIRST EDITION, edited by William Leake, describing Burckhardt's journeys between 1810 and 1816. He studied Arabic at Aleppo in preparation for his travels. He traveled to Syria and the Holy Land, and was the first European to visit Petra.
