PORTER, Josias Leslie (1823-1889) Five Years in Damascus: Including an Account of the History, Topography and Antiquities of that City; with Travels and Researches in Palmyra, Lebanon and the Hauran. London: John Murray, 1855.2 volumes, 8vo (202 x 130 mm). Frontispiece volume one, numerous illustrations, plates and maps. (Old tape repairs.) Publisher's brown gold-stamped cloth (lightly rubbed, corners bumped, discreet library labels on spines with associated markings). FIRST EDITION. Porter was sent to Damascus as a missionary, and over the next ten years he travelled extensively throughout Syria and Palestine. He describes Damascus in his experiences and discusses his journeys to Palmyra, the Hauran, and Lebanon.
