Michael Shapiro is the Senior Advisor, Museums and Private Collections at Hindman.

Mr. Shapiro started with the firm in 2017, working to develop and guide relationships with museums and private collectors. He has spent over 35 years working in the museum field, previously serving as chief curator of the St. Louis Art Museum, director of the LA County Museum of Art and most recently the deputy director and director of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Over the years Michael Shapiro led major museum acquisitions of works of art by: Anish Kapoor, Alex Katz, Ellsworth Kelly, Anselm Kiefer, Roy Lichtenstein, Julie Mehretu, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Gerhard Richter, Thomas Struth, and Jeff Wall. During Mr. Shapiro’s tenure at the High Museum, he helped lead a momentous expansion, doubling its size and bringing in world renowned partnerships and exhibitions. Mr. Shapiro also lends his time as a leader in residence at the Goizueta Business School at Emory University. He is responsible for establishing The David C. Driskell Prize for Excellence in African-American Art and Art History, the first national award to honor the contributions to the field of art of the African Diaspora. Previously, Mr. Shapiro served on the Smithsonian External Review Committee, the board of the Terra Foundation for American Art, and the Harvard University Visiting Committee to the Harvard University Art Museums. He received his Ph.D from Havard University, his M.A. from Williams College and his B.A. from Hamilton College.
