Lot Description
[BENJAMIN HARRISON]. Benjamin Harrison and George Washington jugate patriotic fabric. N.p., 1889.
24 1/2 x 34 3/8 in. printed cotton fabric (small tear near lower Harrison portrait, very occasional pinholes).
Patriotic fabric featuring a portrait of George Washington derived from the 1796 Gilbert Stuart painting next to a portrait of Benjamin Harrison taken from an engraving by H.B. Hall, Jr. and published by D. Appleton & Company. Above the two presidents, a Federal eagle grasping laurels and arrows is superimposed on a shield and two crossed American flags, one bearing 13 stars of the original states, and the other the flag of 1889. Likely produced to celebrate the Centennial of the presidency with "1789" printed above Washington and "1889" above Harrison. An excellent and large example with two iterations of each portrait. Threads of History, #676, 677.
