CHICAGO – On December 7, Hindman Auctions will present an Important Jewelry auction with stunning examples of rubies, sapphires, emeralds and colored diamonds. Festive jewelry that will be offered includes an impressive collection of pieces from Van Cleef & Arpels as well as jewelry by notable makers Cartier, Suzanne Belperron, Graff, Oscar Heyman, Seaman Schepps and Tiffany & Co. Important collections to be featured include jewelry from the family collection of Commodore Matthew C. Perry and August Belmont I, Property from the Collection of Maria Perry (Lexington, Kentucky), Property from the Collection of Barbara Kohl-Spiro (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and Property from a Private Collector (Naples, Florida).

Additional noteworthy lots in the final auction of the year for Hindman’s Jewelry & Timepieces Department are a collection of Rolex watches, Property from a Private Collector, Watertown, Wisconsin.


An Important, Antique Burmese Ruby and Diamond Bracelet

The standout lot of the December auction is an important, antique Burmese ruby and diamond bracelet from the Perry-Belmont Family in Brooklyn, New York (lot 121; estimate: $130,000-$330,000). The bracelet was owned by Caroline Slidell Perry Belmont, daughter of Commodore Matthew C. Perry and wife of August Belmont I. This exceptionally crafted bracelet has an intriguing history and has been in the possession of the family for multiple generations. Additionally, the details are striking – the bracelet contains two pear shaped unheated Burmese rubies and numerous old mine cut diamonds, hinged with a side clasp.

Another special ruby lot that is expected to receive intense bidding interest is a rare unheated Burmese ruby and diamond ring (lot 122; estimate: $120,000 – $220,000). The ring contains one cushion cut ruby weighing approximately 4.00 carats and two trilliant cut diamonds weighing approximately 1.80 carats total. In Hindman’s May Important Jewelry auction, an important Burmese ruby and diamond ring achieved $287,500, and we are expecting to see similar excitement.

Two Extraordinary Sapphire Rings

Lot 53 | An Important Antique, Color-Change Sapphire and Diamond Ring, by Gillot. Estimate: $80,000 – $120,000

Impressive highlights also include a Tiffany & Co., Schlumberger, unheated Burmese sapphire and diamond ‘two bees’ ring (lot 204; estimate: $70,000 – $110,000). The ring features one cushion cut sapphire weighing approximately 9.50 carats and four marquise cut diamonds. The second ring is an important antique, color-change sapphire and diamond ring, by Gillot (lot 53; estimate: $80,000 – $120,000). It consists of an intricate handmade setting with engraved detail containing one oval cut color-change sapphire weighing approximately 20.50 carats.

Two Fancy Yellow Diamond Rings

A superb fancy intense yellow diamond ring by Cartier features one radiant cut, natural fancy intense yellow diamond weighing 9.07 carats, with trilliant cut diamonds on either side (lot 123; estimate: $200,000 – $250,000). The second impressive ring features a radiant cut, natural fancy yellow diamond weighing approximately 14.74 carats (lot 92; estimate: $175,000 – $275,000).

Other ring highlights include an Art Deco, Colombian emerald and diamond ring (lot 29; estimate: $10,000 – $20,000) and an emerald cut diamond ring weighing 5.15 carats and of D color (lot 71; estimate: $70,000 – $90,000).

The auction will also offer a stunning selection of signed bracelets and necklaces. One example is an Oscar Heyman & Brothers, yellow sapphire and diamond bracelet (lot 176; estimate: $25,000- $35,000). A Van Cleef & Arpels, emerald and diamond bracelet is another notable lot (lot 165; estimate: $15,000- $20,000). An Art Deco, diamond necklace (lot 52; estimate: $10,000 – $15,000) and an oval sugarloaf cabochon sapphire (lot 51; estimate: $15,000 – $25,000) are other fantastic selections.
