Timothy Long Appointed Director Luxury Accessories and Couture

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is pleased to announce that Timothy Long has joined the firm as Director and Senior Specialist for its Luxury Accessories and Couture department. Mr. Long has an extensive background as a fashion historian and curator, spending time at important institutions such as the Museum of London and Chicago History Museum.

Mr. Long assumed the role of Director, Senior Specialist effective November 13, 2018. He joins the firm after spending five years as Curator, Fashion & Decorative Arts at the Museum of London where he managed a collection of over 35,500 items, some dating to the 15th century. During his time at the Museum, Mr. Long developed a significant social media following to showcase behind-the-scenes activities and collaborate with other organizations, in addition to managing major exhibitions.

These exhibitions included Pleasure Gardens in 2018, a display of 18th and 19th century clothing, accessories and decorative arts from the Museum of London’s collection; the 2014 six-month exhibition titled Sherlock Holmes: The Man Who Never Lived and Will Never Die; and a number of rotating displays that included contemporary themes such as clothing worn by royal children and relating to the London 2012 Olympics.

Prior to his time at the Museum of London, Long spent a number of years as Curator of Costumes at the Chicago History Museum, whose collection spans some 50,000 items. Here, Mr. Long curated annual fashion exhibitions and helped the Museum publish its first online database while developing educational and public outreach activities that included annual fashion design competitions for the local design community and students.

Exhibitions Mr. Long curated at the Chicago History Museum included Charles James: Genius Deconstructed, featuring 17 dresses created by the designer from 1927 – 1958; Chic Chicago: Couture Treasures from the Chicago History Museum, which featured 62 high fashion and haute couture dresses from 1861- 2008; and The New Look: Christian Dior, showcasing the designer’s work from 1947 to 1957.

“After nearly eight years of living abroad, I am thrilled to be back in my hometown of Chicago,” said Timothy Long. “I look forward to working together with the Hindman team, to forging new relationships and to bringing important and exciting collections to the US market.”

As Director, Senior Specialist at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Mr. Long will work with clients nationwide, consulting on collection management and valuing items against the current auction market. He will travel nationally to appraise institutional, private and estate collections while coordinating a number of annual auctions for the department.
