Treasures from the Garden: Hindman Presents Evelyn Clothier

For centuries, women have been designing jewelry with other women in mind. A craft requiring a sharp eye and discerning taste, women have historically carved out a niche for themselves in the world of jewelry. For this reason, Hindman Auctions is pleased to present several pieces by female designers for our ‘Important Jewelry’ auction this September 13th, 2022. Featuring work by Evelyn Clothier and many others, this auction showcases stunning craftsmanship and elegance inspired by female designers.

One such designer is Evelyn Clothier, whose work is handmade and features a one-of-a-kind approach characterized by traditional quality and elegance. With jewelry featured at the iconic Bergdorf Goodman, Clothier’s pieces (as seen above) delight in garden motifs. Clothier’s brooches also employ a unique technique known as Japanese Cloisonné. Speaking to this Clothier states “I admire and collect Japanese Cloisonné, made by melting ground colored glass into small cells surrounded by wire to create incredible shaded flowers and fauna.” This technique along with Clothier’s passion for French jewelry of the 18th and 19th century shines through in her collection ‘Treasures from the Garden.’ Elaborating on this, Clothier explains “I was an avid gardener. It was joyful to be surrounded by beautiful flowers, butterflies, and other creatures like hummingbirds, fireflies, and a gorgeous night owl. I was inspired to make some drawings.” As seen in Clothier’s pieces, her brooches feature vibrant gemstones, iridescent enameling and the plique-a-jour technique, resulting in whimsical creatures and delicate flowers.

Lot 77 | EVELYN CLOTHIER, DIAMOND AND SAPPHIRE DRAGONFLY BROOCH | Estimate: $6,000- 8,000

With four elegant brooches featured in the auction, Clothier explains “I think the bidder who recognizes that my pieces have a unique personality of their own and can make them feel proud and happy when they are noticed wearing a grasshopper sitting on the shoulder of a dress: a butterfly or dragonfly, seemingly flying off a jacket looking almost alive and shimmering, day or night.” In crafting pieces that consider women, Clothier creates pieces that appeal to collectors interested in adding distinctive jewelry to their collections.
