Hindman’s Native American, Prehistoric & Tribal Art specialists work with a comprehensive network of important dealers, private collectors, and museums. They leverage competition among worldwide bidders to achieve outstanding results for consignors in regularly scheduled auctions.
The Native American, Prehistoric & Tribal Art Department handles historic Native American art, including Navajo weavings, Southwestern jewelry, basketry, beadwork, and other traditional art executed by Native Americans of the Plains, Southwest, and Pacific Coast.
Ms. Farnand has been the director of Native American Art at Cowan’s Auctions since 2003, guiding it from a regional name to one of the category leaders in the country. Now, as part of the Hindman team, she is excited to continue to build and develop this department ad Director of Native American, Prehistoric & Tribal Art.
During her tenure, she has created focused auctions specializing in Historic Native works, jewelry, and Modern and Contemporary Native Arts. Record prices have been set, ranging from an Eastern Plains Three-Bladed Knife Club from the Collection of Marvin L. Lince, Oregon selling for $180,000 to a sculpture by Patrocinio Barela (New Mexican, ca 1900-1964) for $36,000.
As one of the most respected experts in her field, Ms. Farnand has been an appraiser on Antiques Roadshow since 2016. She holds a Master of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from John Carroll University.
