Lot Description
Printed Day Dress, 1860s

This dress comes from the Tasha Tudor Collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Tasha Tudor (née Starling Burgess, 1915-2008) was a writer and illustrator of children’s books, including Mother Goose and Corgiville Fair. The idyllic, 19th century world she painted in her books was the lifestyle she pursued: for much of her adult life Tudor lived on New England farms, weaving, tending to animals, baking bread, and collecting, mending, and wearing centuries-old clothing.
For detailed biography, see Jeanette Chandler Knazek, “Tasha Tudor,” Tashatudorandfamily.com.

Cream and blue floral print day dress with draped front bodice that is shirred at the waist, tiered bell sleeves edged in ecru and blue brocade ribbon with tassels, a full tiered gathered skirt with ikat-style printed  multi-hued floral motif and pocket, and center front hook and eye closure.

Condition Report
Condition:

The overall condition is very good with the following:
Split/Separated Seams: The trim on the proper left lower tier sleeve has come unstitched approximately 5".
Losses: There is a worn hole on the second tier flounce within a print on the skirt front right side.
Fading/Color Change: There does appear to be some sort of color variegation but it is not entirely understood if it is due to age or printing techniques.
Soiling/Spots: There is some general soiling under each of the arms, most noticeable in the lining. There are some small orange spots on the right and left sleeve interior hem, the front right waist at opening, and larger but fainter spots throughout the tiers of the skirt, mostly in the front hip area. Minor soiling is noticeable on the polished cotton hem facing.
Repairs/Alterations: The bust darts have been let out in the interior cotton lining and the hooks at the opening appear to have been restitched at some point. The top tier flounce has a repair made horizontally on the front right side.
