Lot Description
Silk Striped Taffeta Dress, 1862

This dress comes from the Tasha Tudor Collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Tasha Tudor (née Starling Burgess, 1915-2008) was a writer and illustrator of children’s books, including Mother Goose and Corgiville Fair. The idyllic, 19th century world she painted in her books was the lifestyle she pursued: for much of her adult life Tudor lived on New England farms, weaving, tending to animals, baking bread, and collecting, mending, and wearing centuries-old clothing.
For detailed biography, see Jeanette Chandler Knazek, “Tasha Tudor,” Tashatudorandfamily.com.

Blue silk striped taffeta dress with jewel neckline, drop shouldered sleeves trimmed with black lace, a full skirt gathered into waist, and center front black button closure.

Condition Report
Condition:

The overall condition is good with the following:
Split/Separated Seams: Each of the sleeves have some separated seams starting at the armhole and running the lengths of the gussets. The skirt has some loose stitches (see repairs/alterations).
Losses: There are some pinhead sized holes in the skirt lining at the back near the hemline. The skirt braided hem tape is worn through in several spots. The second button from the top has detached but is maintained with the garment.
Soiling/Spots: There are some spots throughout but most noticeable on the right top bodice at chest, the right sleeve near hem, the front skirt near the hemline, the interior front skirt lining, and under each of the arms. There are larger spots on the back of the skirt near the seat level and towards the hemline.
Repairs/Alterations: The bodice has several areas where alterations are evident, the back side seams and waist darts have been let out, the sleeves once had either gathers or pleats that have been unstitched, the skirt appears to have been let out at the waist, lengthened, and reattached. Four buttons have been replaced with plastic shank buttons. The neckline has stitch holes that suggest there may have been an additional piece that was removed.
