Lot Description
Collection of Five Shirtwaists, 1890-1905

This group includes five shirtwaists from the Tasha Tudor Collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Tasha Tudor (née Starling Burgess, 1915-2008) was a writer and illustrator of children’s books, including Mother Goose and Corgiville Fair. The idyllic, 19th century world she painted in her books was the lifestyle she pursued: for much of her adult life Tudor lived on New England farms, weaving, tending to animals, baking bread, and collecting, mending, and wearing centuries-old clothing.
For detailed biography, see Jeanette Chandler Knazek, “Tasha Tudor,” Tashatudorandfamily.com.

Condition Report
Condition:

The overall condition is good with the following:

THE FIRST
Structural Issues: There are some small holes along the front and back neckline, separating the lace from the cotton and the lace collar has several holes from front to back. The back right sleeve has a hole next to the armhole seam.
Split/Separated Seams: The center back placket is starting to become unstitched just under the back neckline.
Soiling/Spots: There is some minor soiling along the neckline and under each arm.
Repairs/Alterations: There is a repair made to the back left waist, next to the tie.

THE SECOND
Structural Issues: The shirt's fabric is very delicate and has many stressed points. There are a few small holes along the front bodice likely due to the alterations made as well as along the back waist area. The center back neckline below the lace collar has some worn through holes and stressed seams. Both sleeves have wear holes starting to form at the forearms just above the banded lace sections.
Fading/Color Change: The overall color has yellowed slightly due to age.
Soiling/Spots: The top of the shoulders are yellowed from wear as are the underarms. Spots are noticeable along both sleeves and the center front and back hemlines.
Repairs/Alterations: The front bodice appears to have been heavily altered by releasing the front waist gathering and pleating. There are a couple of repairs made to the left front side seam area next to the lace ribbon closest to the closure.

THE THIRD
Structural Issues: There are smaller holes formed from wear just below each of the back waist cinch casings and side seams.
Fading/Color Change: The overall color has yellowed due to age, more so around the neckline and upper chest areas.
Soiling/Spots: The interior neckline has some minor soiling due to wear as do each of the under arms. There are spots located on the top left front bodice, right bodice waist, and left front hemline.
Repairs/Alterations: There are multiple repairs made with the majority of them located around each armhole and the back neckline. The back left hook and eye at waist has been replaced.

THE FOURTH
Soiling/Spots: There is some very minor soiling along the neckline and front collar, a light yellow spot on the front left shoulder, and front left hemline.
Repairs/Alterations: One of the center back buttons appears to have been replaced.

THE FIFTH
Fading/Color Change: The overall color has yellowed due to age with darker areas noticeable along the cuffs.
Soiling/Spots: The neckline is lightly soiled from wear and there is a large yellowed spot on the left sleeve near the wrist, smaller darker spots on the upper left opening, and a smaller fainter spot on the center front above the waist. The lower back of the bodice has some darkened soiling from side seam to side seam.
