Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Half plate tintype of identified Confederate lieutenant housed in a Very Very Rare union wall frame. [Richmond, VA]: n.p., [ca 1862].
Half plate tintype bust portrait of a bearded man with striking gaze identified as Lt. James Shannon, Company C, 14th Georgia Infantry Regiment. (Some spotting to plate, heavier discoloration to mat and preserver, unsealed.) Housed in a Very Very Rare union wall frame, Fancy Geometric [Berg 7-83] (soiling, few nicks and cracks to surface). Pencil inscription behind image reads, "Lt. James M. Shannon / Company "C" / 14th Regt Geo Vols / May 1862 / Richmond Va / [Indecipherable] / Shady Dale[?] / Jasper County / Ga."
James Shannon enlisted as a private on 9 July 1861 and mustered into C Company, 14th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment that same day. He was promoted to Jr. 2nd Lieutenant in 1862 and was surrendered along with his regiment at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.
