Titled in the negative, with affixed paper label describing subject on verso. Image features a woman holding an axe, standing in front of a cabin with some tools leaning against the outer wall. "This strange woman" is identified as Mrs. Mallen in the printed description, which goes on to note that her difficult-to-reach cabin is positioned on the summit of Gold Hill at an elevation of 10,000 feet. "The cabin was built mostly by herself, she also making all of the furniture alone...She carries water a mile for cooking and provisions from town...for three or four miles, where others can scarcely follow empty handed."
