Lot Description
Civil War hardtack with period tag identifying it as a piece brought home by a soldier and shared with other "old soldiers."
Approx. 2 3/4 x 2 in. cracker fragment accompanied by a piece of printed muslin in which it was preserved and a period tag inscribed, "War Relic / Piece of Hard Tack given to Mrs. Mandy Johnson when home on a furlough by her Brother Jno Engle a soldier from 1861 to 1865. This piece was complete but was shown to Old Soldiers who had to have a taste. No more will be given as this piece is now to [sic] precious a relic."
