Lot Description
Private Jacob H. Perine, Company E, 4th Michigan Infantry, WIA twice at Gettysburg. A collection of items, incl. GAR dress cap, ribbons, and buttons.
The collection is comprised of:
GAR dress cap with gold lace trim and quatrefoiling, worn while Perine served as Commander of Colonel E.W. Hollingsworth Post No. 210 in Albion, Michigan.
[With:] 30 reunion ribbons beginning with the 4th Michigan's 24th reunion in 1896 and ending with the 52nd reunion in 1924.
[With:] GAR membership badge (B2491).
[Also with:] 16 GAR buttons.
Provenance: Civil War collector Julian Converse of Massillon, OH acquired Private Perine's GAR items for $4.25 in 1955 and the group has remained intact to this day.
Jacob H. Perine, Private, Co. E, 4th Michigan Infantry, survived two wounds in the Wheatfield at the battle of Gettysburg and spent 18 months in US Army Hospitals. He later served with the 1st Michigan Infantry and was detailed at Appomattox to disarm the surrendering Confederate soldiers, some of whom shared his rations for a week afterwards. At the time of his death in 1942, Perine, at 102 years of age, was the oldest surviving Civil War veteran in the state of Michigan.
