Lot Description
Civil War IX Corps badge comprised of clay from Petersburg Mine Explosion. Petersburg, Virginia, July 1864. 

1 3/4 in. x 1 1/2 in. x 1/4 in. thick Ninth Army Corps badge made from clay taken at the Crater at Petersburg, fastened by wire to a thick card stock (some surface soiling to badge). A large portion of the card stock is missing but the key words that provide provenance of this badge are still present, “—(Ar)my Corps B(adge)/of earth / Petersb(urg).” This badge was originally accompanied by a letter written by 1st Lieutenant Charles G. Stinson of the 19th USCT. 

A resident of Mount Vernon, NH, Charles Stinson originally mustered into the 13th New Hampshire Infantry. He was discharged for promotion and commissioned into the 19th United States Colored Troops (USCT) on 12/17/1863.
