Lot Description
Chanel Haute Couture Wool Tweed Skirt Suit with Removable Facings, Spring/Summer 1997

Chanel’s Spring / Summer 1997 Haute Couture collection designed by Karl Lagerfeld was presented at the Ritz Hotel in Paris and was described as one of his most luxurious collections. This fashion show marked a first for Chanel; Lagerfeld presented the haute couture collection alongside his fine jewelry collection, which included designs inspired by Coco Chanel’s famous Bijoux de Diamants collection of 1932.

For this collection, Lagerfeld is famously quoted saying that he wanted to take Chanel ‘to the edge of an exquisite nervous breakdown of luxury’; ‘The idea is over-refinement on the border of hysteria. It’s hysterical elegance, but it’s also very easy – not tortured.’

Haute couture navy wool tweed two-piece skirt suit including a cardigan-style jacket trimmed with navy and white ricrac, removeable white silk satin collar, front facing, and trims, four front pockets with faux pearl buttons, and front button closure; paired with matching straight-fit skirt with left back side zipper closure.
