Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. BRADY, Mathew (1822-1896), photographer. Albumen photograph of Michael Corcoran and officers of the 69th New York Infantry at Fort Corcoran, Virginia. Washington, DC: M. Brady, 1861.
14 5/8 x 10 1/2 in. albumen photograph on 18 3/8 x 14 3/4 in. mount (minor toning, small marks; a few tears to mount). "Brady's Incidents of the War" series title printed caption with photograph title and copyright statement.
A group of 11 officers of the "Fighting" 69th New York Infantry posing with large howitzer artillery and stacked shot on the ramparts of Fort Corcoran. The figure to the far left is believed to be Colonel Michael Corcoran (1827-1863). Corcoran, born in Ireland, was a major figure of antebellum Tammany Hall Democratic politics in New York and a member of the Fenian Brotherhood. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Corcoran was instrumental in rallying Irish recruits to the Union cause. He was given command of the 69th New York and built Fort Corcoran in defense of Washington early in the war.
