Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 3 CDVs, including portraits of Peter Penn-Gaskell, 1st New Jersey Cavalry and 2nd Louisiana Cavalry.
Dual half-length studio portrait of Peter Penn Gaskell and a fellow officer. Baton Rouge, LA: A.D. Lytle, n.d. Photographer's imprint to verso. Near-contemporary ink inscription to verso identifies the subject. -- Full-length standing studio portrait of Peter Penn Gaskell in uniform with his cavalry saber. Philadelphia: F. Gutekunst, n.d. Photographer's imprint to verso. Pencil inscription t verso identifies the subject. -- Together 2 CDV albumen photographs.
Peter Penn Gaskell enlisted as a major on 11 March 1864 and was commissioned into Field & Staff of the 2nd Louisiana Cavalry (Union). He mustered out on 7 September 1864.
The 2nd Louisiana Cavalry was organized at New Orleans, LA on 25 November 1863, as 3rd Louisiana Infantry. Attached to Defences of New Orleans, Dept. of the Gulf. They saw to the defenses of New Orleans at Brashear City, Baton Rouge, and Port Hudson until September 1864. Skirmishing through 1864, Bayou Boeuf on 7 May, Wilson's Landing on 14 May, and Expedition to Clinton in late August.

Pencil inscription to verso identifies the subject as "Wm. P. G." The subject stands and rests one gloved hand on his sword while looking directly at the camera.
