[With:] SCANLAN, Charles M. Indian Creek Massacre and Captivity of Hall Girls. Milwaukee: Reic Publishing Company, 1915.

16mo. Photographic illustrations. Original publisher's green cloth.

FIRST EDITION of Scanlan's account of the Indian Creek massacre and captivity of Sylvia and Rachel Hall. In early 1832, a group of Anglo-American settlers built a dam in LaSalle County, IL. The dam prevented fishing in a nearby Potawatomi village who asked the settlers to remove the dam. When their appeal was denied, the Potawatomi attacked the settlement, killed fifteen, and took Rachel and Sylvia Hall as captives. They were later ransomed and returned unharmed about 2 weeks later. The incident occurred contemporaneously with the Black Hawk War, however, the conflict was not due to any direct action of Black Hawk of the Sauks.

Property from the Estate of Henry G. Lamont, Racine, Wisconsin
