Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Half plate tintype of group of 4 Union privates, possibly from New England. N.p.: n.p., [1860s].
Half plate hand-tinted tintype. (A few scratches, vertical crease near center of plate.) Housed with glass and brass mat and preserver.
A studio group portrait of four Federal privates. A mustachioed man sits in the center, another stands behind, and their two compatriots lean in. Their cheeks have been lightly hand-tinted. The men appear to be privates wearing generic militia belt plates. The double rows of simple braid on the shoulders are decorative rather than indicative of rank. Three of the men wear hat badges that read "HCB," most clearly seen in the central figure's hat. The initials "HCB" relate to an unknown, likely New England-based urban militia infantry company, possibly associated with Hartford, Connecticut. Possibly late war.
