Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Composite photograph of Illinois soldiers from the 4th Cavalry, Company I, and 23rd Infantry.

13 x 19 3/4 in. wooden frame containing 61 photos (58 gem tintype which includes 1 partial photo and 3 CDVs, plus 3 blank/missing photo spots) of which 49 are identified and approx. 25 appear to be in uniform. Each of the gem photos measures approx. 1 1/4 x 2 in., and they are grouped in eight rows with eight photos to a row, totaling 64 photo spots (in addition to 3 missing photos several identifications are missing, some of the photos show wear, based on its backing the composite appears to have undergone some recent restoration). A quite unusual grouping possibly compiled by an Illinois soldier who wanted to honor his comrades that served with the 4th Illinois Cavalry, which fought with General Grant at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, and Shiloh.
