[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - MILITARY]. Quarter plate ambrotype portrait of a English Rifle Volunteer officer holding his sword. [Ca late 1850s].
Quarter plate ambrotype portrait featuring a bearded English Rifle Volunteer officer holding his infantry officer's sword and wearing a belt plate and other accoutrements, housed in a fully separated pressed paper case. (Image with some abrasions and loss to emulsion, with soiling and spotting to mat and preserver; unsealed; case fully separated at spine.) Subject is posed with his 2nd pattern Albert shako on the table next to him.
A widespread revival of the Volunteer Force occurred in the late 1850s in the midst of a popular response to the threat of yet another French invasion of the British Isles.
