Western Plains Pipe Tomahawk, with Modified Head

19th century

tacked haft with scalloped edge; forged blade faintly showing the English hallmarks of bird and sun; blade has been overmarked with USID (United States Indian Department) and modified to a spontoon form

overall length 23-1/4 inches

A tomahawk by the same maker of the English hallmarks of seven stars, a crescent moon, sun, and bird can be found in the collections of the McCord Museum of Canadian History, Montreal, Quebec (collection number M12570).

The markings on the blade is discussed in Hartzler and Knowles Indian Tomahawks and Frontiersmen Belt Axes (1995: 152, fig.70). It has been recently mentioned that these blades may be from the War of 1812 era.
