Lot Description
A 1906 Chicago Baseball Champions Gold and Diamond Medallion Presented to Cubs Pitcher Jacob "Tornado Jake" Weimer,
this extraordinary piece of Chicago sports history was awarded to the left-handed hurler following the Cubs' triumph over the White Sox in a unique post-season matchup in October 1905 to determine a "champion" of the Windy City originally instituted in the 1903 by White Sox owner Charles Comiskey and Cubs owner James Hart. A total of 26 City Series were contested in Chicago through 1942.
To commemorate Weimer's role in the Cubs' 1905 victory, he was presented this medallion using the city's familiar Y shape municipal device, accented with a baseball and bats, as its foundation in 14 karat gold. At the Wolf Point of the medallion's design sits one old European cut diamond weighing approximately 0.25 carat. On the reverse "Presented to Jake Weimer By National Commission" is engraved. The medallion measures slightly over an inch in diameter.
One of the Cubs' leading pitchers in the early 20th century, Weimer went 21-9 with a 2.30 ERA in his rookie campaign followed by a 20-14 effort with an ERA of 1.91. Weimer was later traded to the Cincinnati Reds before the 1906 season and finished his career with the New York Giants – playing his final game in 1909.
