Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR] - [LEE, Robert E. (1807-1870)]. Copy portrait of Robert E. Lee. Nashville, TN: Calvert Bros., [ca 1899].
Approx. 3 x 4 in. (actual image) copy image of General Robert E. Lee on approx. 6 x 8 in. cardstock (Spotting to margins, cardstock.) Housed in cardstock folder with Calvert Bros. imprint and embossed "C" on cover (spotting, some fading to interior, wear to edges and corners).
After a circa 1868-1869 Brady & Co. image of the general sitting next to the famous Reaper Clock that sat in Brady & Co. Washington, D.C. photograph studio. This is a rare variation of the "clock on table" pose, showing a full view of the seated Lee including his fully-visible shoes, the entire clock and much more of the table than seen in other renditions. Close examination shows that this is not the same pose as the commonly seen "clock portrait" because of the position of Lee's left elbow in relation to the clock on the table and other small details.
