FIRST EDITION. Howard Thurman (1900-1981) was the first Black dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University and co-founder of the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco, California, the first inter-racially co-pastored church in America. He was one of the principal architects of the modern, nonviolent civil rights movement and a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
