A Pair of Needlework Embroidered Schoolgirls' Samplers, Wrought by the Kettell Sisters, Sukey and Esther
Likely Charlestown, Massachusetts, Late 18th Century
one wrought by Sukey Kettell / agd 11 1792 with text from hymns "All Praise to Thee, My God, This Night" and "Is There Ambition in My Heart," along with tumbling foliate borders and sheep and birds at bottom.
the other wrought by Esther Kettell Agd 14 1797 with text from "How Fair is the Rose?" (Isaac Watts, Divine and Moral Songs, first published in 1715), along with perched birds and sheep in profile at bottom.

Genealogical records confirm that Susanna "Sukey" (1780-1855) and Esther (1783-1862) Kettell were both born in Charlestown, Massachusetts to Andrew and Susanna Lamson Kettell.
