Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A quarter plate ambrotype and full plate tintype of Civil War soldiers, comprising:
Quarter plate ambrotype. (Some deterioration of the black varnish applied to back of plate, detail and contrast remain strong.) Housed in a full, pressed paper case (reinforced at hinge, some light surface wear). Studio portrait of two Civil War soldiers in frock coats and kepis, with both appearing to be smoking cigars.
[With:] 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. hand-painted, full plate tintype of a Federal soldier in full uniform, holding a rifle with bayonet alongside him in order arms position (image in very good condition, corners creased). The subject's cheeks are tinted pink, and he wears a belt plate, buttons, epaulets, and kepi insignia highlighted in gold.
