Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Autographed CDV of New York Volunteers Assistant Surgeon C.W. Howe.

2 1/8 x 3 1/2 in. CDV on cardstock mount (toning, few spots, light soiling, wear to mount edges and corners). Signed on mount recto, "Yours Truly / CW Howe, Asst Surg[eon] / [N].Y.V." The subject wears a sash underneath his belt, which has been crudely hand-colored green, though much of the coloring substance has worn off.

Carey W. Howe enlisted on 1 September 1862 as an assistant surgeon, and was commissioned into the 116th New York Infantry Regiment a week later. He was discharged on 6 January 1863. He went on to practice medicine in Buffalo some time after the war.
