Lot Description
[MILITARIA]. Sixth plate daguerreotype of a Midshipman or Passed Midshipman, likely American.
Sixth plate daguerreotype. (Some vertical wipes to left side of plate, tarnish to edges, few blemishes to plate.) Housed under mat, glass, and preserver only, no case. A seated portrait that possibly shows either a Midshipman or Passed Midshipman (in American service). The subject's uniform shows no insignia on the collar, whereas there should be under the 1841 US Navy Regulations. The uniform of this junior rank is notoriously plain, both in the US and British navies, and we are unable to authenticate the button arrangement on the uniform coat under the prevailing 1841 US Navy regulations.
