This lot is located in Cincinnati.

Provenance:
This panel was once installed in the Nichols Middle School in Evanston, Illinois. An article in the Chicago Sunday Tribune from May 21, 1944 notes that two tile installations, one by William Morris (English, 1834-1896) and the other by Walter Crane (English, 1845-1925), were installed in the school in 1944. Both installations were reportedly made for the Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris, then exhibited in the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and stored for fifty years in a warehouse in Chicago before being acquired for the school's industrial arts room by Frederick W. Nichols, a superintendent for the Evanston schools. The tiles were later deinstalled. The tile on offer here, also from the school, is similar to English Arts and Crafts tiles of the period.
