Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 2 Civil War CDVs of Ohio soldiers, incl. Private Philip M. Conkle, Bugler, Co. F, 115th Ohio Volunteers.

Full standing portrait of Private Philip M. Conkle, wearing a frock coat and holding a bugle on one arm. Cincinnati, OH: Dewey & Gibson, ca 1862. (Corners clipped, some loss to upper right corner of image, heavy spotting.) Photographer's imprint to verso along with ink inscription reading, "Phillip Conkle cousin of Mathers Almina Conkle daughter of Jonathan Conkle." A separate inscription dates the image to 1862. -- Full standing portrait of a young infantry officer wearing a frock coat and forage cap. Piqua, OH: C.A. Gale, n.d. (Some loss to lower left edge of image, significant spotting and blotching.) Photographer's imprint to verso. -- Together, 2 CDVs, each 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. or smaller, on cardstock mounts.

Though HDS returns two Philip Conkles serving in Ohio regimets during the Civil War, the image likely depicts bugler Philip March Conkle (1840-1913), who enlisted on 5 August 1862 and mustered into Company F of the 115th Ohio Infantry the following month. He mustered out on 22 June 1865 at Murfreesboro, TN. He would later settle in California, where he is buried at Fairhaven Cemetery in Orange County.
