Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Quarter plate tintype featuring a Union soldier with a civilian rifle.

Quarter plate full standing portrait of a Federal soldier in uniform, holding his ornate percussion half stock "Kentucky" style civilian rifle upright by the barrel. (Light blemishes to upper left corner of image, spotting to mat; unsealed.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (surface wear, loss, soiling discoloration and wear to velvet pad).

It is possible this subject was a member of Birge's Western Sharpshooters, later the 66th Illinois. Many of them carried civilian rifles by Dimick of St. Louis early in the war.

Property from the Inventory of James C. Frasca
