Quarter plate outdoor portrait of 8 soldiers in full uniform, standing in a row along a waterfront, with buildings visible in the background. (Some scratches, dings, and light creases to plate, spotting to preserver; unsealed.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (surface wear, loss). All subjects wear full uniforms with gloves, headgear, and belt plates. Box plates are visible on cartridge box slings worn by 4 subjects. 

The 1st New York Marine Artillery Regiment was recruited by Colonel W.A. Howard for service on gunboats. The regiment mustered in for three years' service between November 1861 and August 1862. Companies A through G served at New Bern, NC in April of 1862, and were joined by H, I, and K the following months. The regiment served in North Carolina attached to the XVIII and X Corps, portions of it taking part in engagements at Roanoke Island, Elizabeth City, New Bern, Fort Macon, South Mills, Swift Creek, Rawle's Mills, and more.
