Lot Description
[MASSACHUSETTS]. GOODWIN II, Ichabod (1743-1829). Autograph letter signed ("Ichabod Goodwin"), to Increase Sumner, Governor of Massachusetts. Berwick, [MA], 7 September 1797.

 

1 page, folio, 8 1/4 x 13 1/2 in., with integral address panel on conjugate leaf, short marginal tears, some soiling along old folds, loss from original wax seal. 

Ichabod Goodwin II was a politician and congressman from South Berwick, Maine. He served in the provincial congress in 1775 and 1777 and was a lieutenant colonel in Gerrish's York county regiment. From 1783 to 1815 he was a major general in the militia and was sherrif of York County, ME from 1793 to 1820. Here, he writes to Massachusetts Governor Increase Sumner forwarding a request for "field pieces & the necessary apparatuses" and asking that the governor direct the request to the Quartermaster General. 

 

Ichabod Goodwin II was a soldier and congressman from South Berwick, Maine. He was a member of the provincial congress in 1775 and 1777; and was lieutenant-colonel of Gerrish's York county regiment, having charge of the Saratoga prisoners. He was major-general of militia from 1783 to 1815; a member of the general court in 1792; and sheriff of York county, Maine, from 1793 to 1820.
