Lot Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. The Star. Vol. I, No. 43. Raleigh, NC: Thomas Henderson, 25 October 1810.
4pp., folio, 12 1/2 x 19 3/8 in. Disbound (spotting, significant chipping and loss to edges, creased along horizontal fold). Provenance: Major John Hinton (subscriber's ink inscription at top). Major John Hinton (1748-1818), oldest son of Colonel John Hinton, served as an officer during the Revolutionary War, and served in various political offices thereafter. Hinton was also an enslaver, and an 1810 census lists 20 enslaved persons belonging to his household.
The front page features several illustrated advertisements for freedom seekers. Woodcut illustrations depicting variously clad, running enslaved persons are presented alongside headings, "Fifty Dollars Reward," "Twenty Dollars Reward," and "30 Dollars Reward." Descriptions of the freedom seekers follow, including this example: "He is large and likely, about five feet eleven inches high, and aged thirty-five. His face is overrun with marks of the Small Pox, and on one side of his nose (the right side I believe) there is a scar occasioned by the kick of a horse." Each notice is undersigned by the advertising enslaver.
