Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] -- [OCCUPATIONAL]. Photograph of African American men working in a rock quarry or mine.
8 x 6 in. silver gelatin photograph on cardstock mount (few abrasions and spots of discoloration to image surface; mount with some soiling, dampstaining, and wear including several rips/tears). Likely modern pencil inscription to verso.
A large group of mostly African American male subjects stand among rocks in what appears to be a quarry or mining site, with a few well-dressed white men, women, and children also present in the crowd, including a rotund white man with a mustache and bowler hat who stands at the center of the composition. Some of the workers hold tools, including a sledge hammer and shovel. Two small shacks and a buckwagon fill in the background of the scene.
