Six Japanese Carved Wood 'Figural Group' Netsuke
19th Century
the first a Chinese scholar riding on horseback with his attendant standing besides, all above a crouching dragon, the underside inscribed with a two-character mark, Toun 東雲; the second by Shouju, showing a male figure sleeping on a tree trunk, the underise inscribed with a two-character mark, 松壽; the third by Unkyo Yasunaga, depicting figures in a pavilion above waves, the underside inscribed with a four-character mark, 雲橋安長; the fourth depicting a seated immortal with both arms stretched out, each hand bearing a bowl, two turtles climbing onto his handsl the underside signed with a two-maker's mark, 三仙; the fifth another example showing a Chinese schoarl riding on a horse with his attendant next to him, the underside bearing a mother-of-pearl inlaid panel inscribed with two-character maker's mark; the sixth depicting a hunter riding on a running boar, the underside inscribed with a two-character maker's mark. 
Average height 1 3/8 in., 3.5 cm.
