[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. A group of 9 documents related to the enslavement of individuals in Bourbon County, Kentucky, incl. estate appraisement of a horse breeder who enslaved six people.


Appraisement of the estate of Thomas Sparks. [Bourbon County, KY], 13 May 1812. 2 pages, folio, 7 7/8 x 12 3/4 in., partial separations and toning along old creases. Undersigned. Docketed to verso. Listing 6 named enslaved people, mostly children: Patty (50), Suzanna (3), Patty (13), Mary (12), Willis (8), and Lucy (7).

Affidavit. Bourbon County, KY, December 1818. 2 pages, 7 3/4 x 3 5/8 in. Docketed to verso. The document appoints "Henry Clay, James Duncan, William Bogges, and Washington Kennedy to "diviide the slaves of John Grills deceased."

Account of the sales of the estate of Anthony Thornton juno. dcd. [Bourbon County, KY]: ca 1819. 2 pages, folio, 7 3/8 x 12 1/8 in, toned, old creases. Undersigned. An accounting of the estate of Anthony Thornton, Jr. (1775-1819) with sold prices, including 2 enslaved men: Peter ($500) and Wyatt ($400). 

Appraisal document for the estate of James Chamblin. Bourbon County, KY, 27 March 1823. 2 pages, folio, 7 7/8 x 12 1/4 in., toned, brown staining, small separations at old creases. Undersigned. Docketed to verso. The estate lists a “Negro boy or lad named Griffing valued by us in specie at four hundred + fifty dollars."

Allotment document dividing property and enslaved people from the estates of John, Lucy, and Mary Chamblin. Bourbon County, KY, 7 January 1826. 4 pages, 4to, 7 5/8 x 9 5/8 in., toned, Undersigned. A document to "appraise and divide the slaves + other property of Mary, Lucy, and John L. Chamblin", with several named enslaved individuals and their values listed under the three Chamblins: Mary enslaved Charity & Lewis ($425), and Brice ($250); Lucy enslaved Betty and child ($290.25), and Eady ($375); John enslaved Henry ($250) and Sam ($225). The following pages detail to whom each was sold. Unusual document recording the estates of three members of one family.

Affidavit. Bourbon County, KY, October 1842. 2 pages, 7 7/8 x 5 3/8 in. Docketed to verso. An affidavit appointing several men to "divide the slaves of" Willoughby Sanford. 

Inventory and Appraisement of all the Personal estate of George Thomas Deceased. [Kentucky], [1850s]. 4 pages, folio, 7 13/16 x 12 3/8 in., brown spotting, partial separation at hinge. An estate appraisement that lists 6 enslaved people: Milford ($300), Joseph ($600), Martin ($650), John ($600), Willis ($550), and Buona ($475). Thomas was evidently a horse breeder with many horses listed, several with lineages.

Inventory and appraisement of the personal Estate of George Talbott decd. [Bourbon County, KY], 18 December 1852. 4 pages, folio, 7 1/4 x 12 1/4 in. partial separation at hinge. Undersigned, Docketed to verso. Estate appraisal listing 9 named enslaved individuals with ages and values: Spencer (50, $300), Alexander (17, $800), Alfred (22, "not stout", $600), Orrange (15, $700), Milka (45, $250), Ellis (2, $200), Sarah Anne (16, $600), Harriett (14, $500), and Margaret (11, "not stout", $250).

Appraisement of enslaved people to be divided. Bourbon County, KY, 4 December 1854. 2 pages, folio, 7 7/8 x 12 1/2 in., on blue paper. Docked to verso. A document recording the values given by a court-appointed commissioner to 8 enslaved individuals to be divided among the heirs: Mahaley and her child Margarett ($900), Wiliam (2, $200), Eliza (15, $800), Maria (11, $650), Willis (8, $500), Charles (6, $500), and Milla (4, $400).
