Lot Description
[CIVIL RIGHTS]. Pittsburgh Courier advertisement for June issues highlighting civil rights and politics. Ca mid-20th century.
11 x 14 in. printed cardstock poster (soiling to right side, wear to edges and corners). Red, white, and blue text promotes the weekly periodical's "June Exclusives," including "Is the GOP National Committee Anti-Negro?" and "Are White Supremacists Killing Labor?"
The Pittsburgh Courier, the first issue of which was published in 1907, served as one of the nation's leading black newspapers, not only covering local lifestyle and sports news, but also covering injustices perpetrated upon African Americans by entities including the Pullman Company, urging readers to support companies and organizations like the NAACP and the National Urban League. The newspaper, and one of its most prominent voices (and later editor), Robert Lee Vann, also persuaded black voters to shift their allegiance from the Republican to the Democratic Party.
