Lot Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Postcard featuring Elijah Green, "One of the Few Ex-Slaves Living 1941." [Charleston, SC], ca 1942.
3 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. halftone postcard (soiling, light wear to edges and corners). Cancelled at Charleston, SC, 3 April 1943. Caption printed on verso reads, "Elijah Green / One of the Few Ex-Slaves Living 1941. / Sadi to have been Born 1838. / Sits in Front of Old Slave Mart / 6 Chalmers St. / Charleston, S.C."
An aged African American man sits on a porch in front of a window with sign below reading, "Old Slave Market." His walking stick rests up against the window sill.
The United States' participation in the international slave trade was banned in 1808. This prompted the creation of a domestic system for trading enslaved persons, to which Charleston soon became central with the establishment of The Old Slave Mart that same year. After slavery was abolished in the United States, the property changed hands many times before it was finally placed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The site is now home to the Old Slave Mart Museum, owned by the City of Charleston.
