Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. "Certificate of Service of a Soldier" for Pvt. Isaac Earnheart, 5th NC, KIA Gettysburg.
Manuscript certificate signed by Luther Martin Davis ("L. M. Davis") as Captain of Company K, 5th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. 8 September 1863.
8 x 3 3/16 in., creasing, staining, wear to edges and corners.
"I certify that Isaac Earnhart [elsewhere spelled "Earnheart"], a soldier of Company K 5th Regt. N.C. Troops, enlisted on the 8th day of August 1862, and that he died in the Service on the 1st day of July 1863 of gun shot in Battle, that he had received $00 Bounty from the State of North Carolina, and had at the time of his death $50 due him."
Isaac Earnheart was killed on 1 July, 1863.
Luther Martin Davis enlisted on 16 May 1861, and mustered into Company K of the 5th North Carolina Infantry Regiment that same day. He was promoted to captain in July of 1862. He was wounded at Chancellorsville in May of 1863, returned to service in September, and was again wounded at Spottsylvania Court House in May of 1864.
