American School, 19th Century
A Naval Engagement between American and British Vessels

19 1/4 x 29 1/4 inches.

Depicting an unidentified and possibly imagined engagement between both sail and steam-powered vessels. The scene may be loosely based on the narrows at the entry to New York Harbor with Fort Hamilton visible at the lower right of the painting.
Condition Report
Framed: 23 1/2 x 33 3/4 inches.

Professionally restored by Sarah Dove and Rhonda West, New London, Connecticut, after 2006. Per treatment report, ground is hinged with Japanese paper to rag backing board, with attached rag window mat fitted with polyester moisture barrier and sealed prior to framing. Not removed from passe-partout seal for examination, but repaired tears visible to sky, spanning width of painting. Light toning to ground, with bright, bold colors.
